Why You Should Not Skip or Delay Vaccinations
Parents can think of all the excuses in the world to skip their children’s vaccination. While many just cannot tolerate the crying, others believe vaccines will give kids autism. However, they forget the fact that without vaccines, a child is vulnerable to diseases that used to kill millions back then when vaccines were not available. For example, mumps, pertussis, measles, and whooping cough are coming back and being more dangerous since kids are not vaccinated.
Medical consequences of not getting vaccinated
An unvaccinated kid faces life-long risks even if he or she does not catch the diseases. If he or she needs medical treatment, you will need to inform the staff of his or her vaccination status because people who did not receive vaccination in childhood may require distinctive treatment. This brings us to the next problem: Medical staff may not be well-versed in treating unvaccinated children, the risk tends to increase. Pregnant women who are not vaccinated are likely to get infected with diseases that may cause pregnancy complications. For example, if a pregnant woman gets rubella during her first trimester, her baby may be born with congenital rubella syndrome (CRS), which potentially leads to heart defects, developmental delays and deafness.
Not vaccinating your children also put other people at risk. There are people whose medical conditions do not allowed them to be vaccinated (those with leukemia or other cancers, e. g.). So, they must rely on other people being vaccinated so they are not at risk of exposure. If your childen are not vaccinated and get ill, other people around them are in danger, too.
Social consequences of not getting vaccinated
If your child is not vaccinated, when he or she is sick or exposed to diseases, exclusion and even quarantine may be required. Your child will have to miss out on school and other events. This may also influence your family as a whole. In fact, there are schools which do not accept unvaccinated children for the sake of other kids.
Weighing the risks
To tell the truth, vaccines do come with side effects, just like any other types of medication. However, the benefits clearly outweigh the risks. If a vaccine poses a real danger, it will not be approved. The false claims about vaccines causing autism have led many parents to put their own children and others at risk of deadly diseases that could be prevented. While there is no evidence to support this claim, statistics about the deaths caused by those preventable diseases is undeniable. Making sure your children get all the recommended vaccines is the only way to keep them and the whole community safe.
